Marine Torque had its origins in the early 1990s, conceived by Ian Parsons and well-known and highly respected fishing identity, the late Michael (Mike) O’May. It had become apparent to Mike and Ian that to provide the very best service for fishermen, a marine broker needed to be someone who understood the fishery and had close dealings with all those in the industry.

Both Mike and Ian had direct knowledge of commercial fishing and vessels, and Ian had a finger on the pulse of the industry due to his involvement with commercial marine insurance. He had already been an agent for Sunderland Marine Mutual for many years, through whom he insured a large percentage of the fishing fleet in Tasmania and a very large number elsewhere in Australia. Due to Ian having wide and constant contact with fishermen, he was increasingly being approached for advice on what boats might be for sale, who might want to sell or lease licences, and so forth. Similar requests were being made of Mike, due to his high standing within the fishery.

Mike and Ian each had the credentials to perform well in a brokering role and to provide a professional brokering service. And so Marine Torque was born.

Mike O’May and Ian Parsons operated in partnership for almost ten years, until Mike’s very early and tragic passing. Ian continued to build Marine Torque, as an adjunct to working within the fishing industry in his capacity as an insurance agent for Sunderland Marine insurance.

In April 2007, Ian and Marine Torque were extremely fortunate in obtaining the services of Abbie Griggs, a young lady very well known to those in the Tasmanian fishing industry for the invaluable assistance provided by her to all fishermen, during her eight-year tenure with the Department of Primary Industries and Water.

Abbie was appointed as a consultant to Marine Torque, and continues to use her extraordinary knowledge of fisheries and its laws, albeit now from the other side in her position as a marine broker.

Abbie Griggs and Ian Parsons work in collaboration, offering a highly professional marine brokering service for commercial fishing vessel sales and leases, commercial fishing license sales and leasing, unit sales and seasonal leasing of all quota types.
